TYRONE – If the Central Mountain wrestling team wants to earn a trip to the PIAA Team Duals in Hershey Feb. 7-9, the Wildcats will first have to clear two substantial hurdles awaiting them this Saturday in Tyrone.
The No. 3 seed Wildcats (11-1) will meet No. 2 seed Mifflin County (9-2) on one mat Saturday at 10 a.m.; on the other, No. 1 seed Bellefonte (15-3) will take on No. 4 seed Altoona (7-5). The winners will meet immediately afterwards for the District 6 team dual title, the champ heading to the Giant Center in Hershey for a PIAA first-round match Thursday, Feb. 7.
The Wildcats will be looking to avenge an upset loss to Mifflin County in last year’s semifinals. Central Mountain had defeated Mifflin County in two meetings in January last year, by scores of 41-21 and 40-24. But when they met in Tyrone, the Huskies pulled off a 36-35 criteria upset.
This year the two teams did not meet in the regular season, last week’s scheduled dual lost to the weather and not to be made up. But both are again very good, Central Mountain ranked No. 15 in the state, the Huskies at No. 22.
The CM-MC winner will get the Bellefonte-Altoona winner for the right to advance. Both Bellefonte and Altoona are not state-ranked. The Red Raiders will be favored over the Mountain Lions, already owning a 40-30 regular season win over the Blair County school. Central Mountain heads to Tyrone coming off a hard-earned 36-25 win over Bellefonte last Friday
The record-online will offer live audio stream of the game with John Lipez and Tom Elling offering up the call to bring you all the action. The stream will go live approximately 15 minutes before the match begins.
